FAQ
Why should I avoid zoos?
Zoos are in the business of entertainment, which means putting animals on display, breeding them in captivity, forcing them to live in cramped cages and, in many cases, abusing them. There are countless examples of animals that died from abuse or neglect within zoos. Granted, many zoos do play a valuable role in animal conservation but this does not negate the damage they also do. We believe that animal sanctuaries are a better and kinder alternative to zoos.
Why are there not more sanctuaries listed?
Anyone can call themselves a sanctuary. Sadly, many roadside zoos have since rebranded themselves as sanctuaries. So we only included animal sanctuaries accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. While this does limit the number of sanctuaries we include it ensures that we only list sanctuaries that have been independently verified as providing a safe haven for animals.
What does a sanctuary have to do to become accredited?
